James Suckling: "A big, rounded and generous wine that wraps fine-grained tannins around gorgeous red and black fruit on a full body. Clos des Ursules is a monople of Jadot’s and one of the vineyards they have used for generations. Opens with spicy cinnamon, cloves and toast, then vivid raspberries, red plums and mint on the palate."
Founded in Beaune in 1859, Maison Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s defining négociant houses. Head winemaker Frédéric Barnier focuses on a low-intervention approach designed to express individual sub-regional terroirs cleanly and accurately across their portfolio.
Hand-harvested and sorted, the grapes undergo fermentation in open vats over 3 to 4 weeks. The wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels (about 30–40% new oak) from Jadot's own cooperage, allowing for optimal structure and long-term aging potential without overwhelming the fruit.
Clos des Ursules is a legendary 2.75-hectare monopole owned exclusively by the Gagey family (Maison Louis Jadot) within the Premier Cru Les Vignes Franches in Beaune. Situated on deep clay-limestone soil with excellent drainage, this warm microclimate yields wines of remarkable power, complexity, and concentration.
Deep ruby-purple in color. The nose exhibits intensely concentrated aromas of ripe dark cherries, crushed blackberries, licorice, and subtle toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and muscular, offering firm yet refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and an extraordinarily long, earthy finish.
