Organic Ceylon Spinach, scientifically known as Basella alba, is a leafy green vine widely cultivated in tropical regions. Although its name includes "spinach," it is not the same species as the common spinach we usually eat (Spinacia oleracea).
It is a fast-growing climbing vine that requires support structures to grow.
-
Leaves: Thick, smooth, fleshy, and slightly succulent with a glossy appearance.
-
Stems: Depending on the variety, the stems and leaves can be green or purplish-red.
-
Fruit: It produces dark purple-black berries, the juice of which can be used as a natural food coloring for pastries, jellies, and other dishes.
One of the most distinctive features of Ceylon spinach is its slippery, mucilaginous (slimy) texture when cooked. This mucilage comes from the sap in its stems and leaves and acts as a natural thickener in cooking. Its flavor is mild, similar to regular spinach, and some people describe a subtle peppery note.
It is highly versatile—the tender leaves and young stems are both edible.
-
Salads: Young leaves can be eaten raw.
-
Soups and stews: An excellent ingredient for thickening broths and soups.
-
Stir-frying: Commonly sautéed with garlic for a simple and delicious dish.
-
Curries: Very common in Southeast Asian cuisine, for example, cooked with lentils in coconut curry.
Organic Ceylon Spinach is a nutrient-rich, uniquely flavored leafy green vegetable. It thrives particularly well in hot summer climates, can be used as a great substitute for common spinach, and adds a distinct texture and delicious taste to your dining table.
