(2023 vintage) James Suckling: "So ripe, full and generous, with a full body and a big presence. Lovely apple blossom and lemon zest aromas with juicy apple and Bartlett pear flavors on a foundation of lively acidity. An element of chalky, mineral notes adds complexity and freshness, giving a linear feel to this big, bold wine. ."

(2024 vintage) James Suckling: "This has a lovely core of fruit with aromas of nectarines, grilled lemons and flint. The midweight, textural palate shows balanced acidity, finishing with a slight phenolic grip. Moving out of the cooler 2023 bottling, this is far more generous and open."

Named for the red‑shouldered hawks that soar above the estate, Shafer’s single‑vineyard Chardonnay reflects both meticulous farming and sustainable practices. Produced from small‑clustered clones chosen for low yields and distinctive flavor, this wine undergoes no malolactic fermentation, preserving its natural brightness. Aged nine months in a mix of French oak (40% new) and stainless steel barrels.
