Sweet Japanese Pears Now in Season

Can you feel the autumn breeze? Now is the best time to enjoy sweet, refreshing Japanese pears. city’super is delighted to bring you our curated selection of premium Japanese pears, so you can savour autumn at its finest.

Japanese Hirooka Farm 20th Century Pear
The 20th Century Pear is a type of nashi. The green-yellow fruit has a beautiful round shape and is juicy, with thin skin and a sweetness level of 11.5 brix. Tottori Prefecture is the largest producer of 20th Century Pears, accounting for a quarter of Japan’s total production. The pears are in season from mid-August to early September.

Japanese Syurei Pear
Grown using the bagless cultivation method, the fruit achieves a high sweetness level of 13 brix. The surface of the fruit is covered in spots, which indicate that the fruit has been exposed to sunlight, contributing to the high sugar content. The flesh is crispy, juicy and dense, with a very rich taste that is as sweet as a persimmon. It is one of the rising stars among Japanese pears.

Fun Facts on Growing Exceptional Pears

  • During the flowering period, unnecessary buds and flowers are removed in areas where pear trees are expected to bear fruit, allowing for a greater concentration of nutrients.
  • Weaker fruit are selectively removed during the fruiting stage to allow high-quality pears to absorb more nutrients, so they can be sweeter and more flavourful.
  • The process of removing buds, flowers and fruit relies on the farmers’ experience and their predictions of the pear trees’ growth.

    A mid-season variety that is harvested in mid-September. The sugar level is 12 to 13 brix, and the flesh is dense and soft.

    Japanese Niitaka Pear
    Only five fruit are kept on each branch. In the early stages of the harvest, farmers rely on their craftsmanship, skills and experience to selectively pick fruit based on their anticipated growth. This ensures that the selected fruit can absorb the maximum amount of nutrients.

    When fully ripe, they have a juicy, smooth, buttery texture with a sweet flavour.

    French Comice Pear:

    Must-try Japanese Sweet Persimmons

    Autumn is the season for persimmons. city’super has specially selected three varieties of Japanese persimmons that are in season right now. Share them with your family and friends!

    Japanese Taisyu Persimmon
    The average size is about 300-400g. The flesh is juicy with a dense, pear-like texture. The fruit is crunchy and refreshing if you enjoy it before ripening. When it’s ripe, the fruit has a rich sweetness; the sugar content can reach 17-18 brix.

    Japanese Akiou Persimmon
    This persimmon was first cultivated in Fukuoka Prefecture in 2001. The delicious fruit has a high sugar content and a crispy texture. It has a beautiful orange-red colour and almost no seeds.

    Japanese Fukuoka Nishimura Wase Black Sesame Persimmon
    A very rare sesame persimmon variety. When ripe, the flesh has sesame-like black spots with a crispy texture and a refreshing flavour. A very popular fruit.

    Japanese Saga Bijin Mikan Orange
    A renowned brand of Saga mikan, this fruit has a great balance between sweetness and tartness. You’ll fall in love at first bite.

    Japan Kumamoto Hinosakigake Mikan
    A variety harvested in early autumn. The skin is light yellow in colour with a hint of green, while the flesh is of a rich orange shade. The taste is refreshing, with an excellent balance of sweetness and acidity.

    Japanese Takashima Farm Mikan
    This Japanese mikan produced by city’super’s partner farm is grown in high-altitude areas and has a traditional flavour. The skin is easy to peel and the taste is sweet and refreshing.

    Japan Fukuoka Yamakawa Mikan
    Produced in Fukuoka Prefecture’s Yamakawa Town, known as the “Town of Mikans”, these mikans are of a variety known for its rich flavour and sweetness. The flesh is dark orange, delicate and juicy, with relatively low acidity.
