This deep-fried tofu ball, called Hiryuzu in Japanese, its name is said to derived from Portuguese, meaning a sweet dish made by mixing flour and eggs then deep-fried in oil. This Deep-Fried Tofu Ball is a famous deep-fried dish in the Edo period, mostly made by mixing tofu, yam, and vegetables such as shredded radish, shredded burdock, shiitake mushrooms, kelp and made into a round shape and then deep-fried. This delicacy is now commonly used in making Oden and stews.
