The utensils we provide (trays, tasting cups and so on) are made of 100% whole plant and renewable raw sugar cane fibre, which is food safe and doesn’t contain harmful substances. They can be recycled, and biodegraded and composted together with food waste for a sustainable life cycle.
Where necessary, we offer cutlery made from natural materials for takeaway items.
The tissue we offer is made from bamboo pulp. Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest-growing plants, providing more fibre, releasing more oxygen and absorbing more CO₂ than most others. Not only is bamboo a sustainable and renewable raw material, but it is also biodegradable.
Bamboo fibre paper towels and biodegradable disinfecting wipes are available for purchase at city’super, so you can also enjoy an eco-friendly lifestyle at home.

Furoshiki, or Japanese traditional wrapping cloths, are made of either cotton or silk; they are washable, easy to store and very versatile. As environmental protection and waste reduction have been a major focus for many in recent years, furoshiki have also garnered a lot of attention.
city’super has partnered with self-funded social enterprise RE-WRAP over the years to launch different collections of organic cotton bags and furoshiki. New patterns are released each year, providing customers with more gift wrapping options that are both environmentally friendly and an excellent way to spread festive cheer among family and friends.
Recycling boxes are available in store to encourage customers to participate in our polyfoam recycling programme. The polyfoam collected will be sent to the “Missing Link” workshop for melting and compacting; the melted polyfoam will then be exported overseas to recycling companies to make other products. We also recycle plastic bags and cartons at our logistics centres.
Since July 2021, we have partnered with The Nature Conservancy to trial oyster shell recycling at the oyster bars of some of our branches. The collected oyster shells are sorted and cleaned to make oyster reefs, which provide suitable homes for small marine animals and revitalise sustainable aquaculture.
